Lesson #9 Journal Entry

This lesson was a bit dull for me because I had already read a couple of the talks in several other classes. They are great talks but I feel like they may be a bit overused by BYU-I. Anyway, I did like learning about the concepts from the book Good to Great. It is currently on my to read list, so I enjoyed getting a summarized version of it. One thing that I am hoping to take away from this lesson is learning how to build people up and bringing everyone to a higher level. I have just been given a new calling at church and I think it will give me an opportunity to practice some of these skills. I know that as a mom, these skills can come in handy but I really want to work on this in a "professional" area and my calling is the only place I really have an opportunity to do that. Even my job is hard because I work with kids and work in a different place every day. It's hard to see any long term effects from my actions.

This past week I did my entrepreneurial mentor interview. It was a great experience. Even though I don't have an immediate desire to start my own business, I feel there is a lot that I can learn from people in all walks of life. I liked hearing about her successes and failures and the biggest takeaway that I had from the interview is that I need to have confidence in myself. That is harder than it sounds but I think that when you have confidence, it lends you the momentum to get through the trials and lessons of new experiences.

Another thing I've been thinking about a lot lately is asking questions. I've always struggled to ask questions but just recently, I've been noticing a new confidence in asking questions when I may have just tried to figure out the answer on my own. I think this is also something I'm going to continue to work on. I used to feel dumb when I had to ask something I felt I should already know but often I have been noticing that when I ask a question that through the discussions the questions brings about, I feel more empowered and have a deeper connection to those I am working with. It's something to keep thinking on and working on.
