Last Lecture

I really loved this class. I think it's a good class to take even if you don't want to start your own business. There are so many great things for personal growth to take from it. The class focuses on the fact that you can't know what you want to do in business until you know who you truly are and what you're passionate about. I think that one piece of caution I would give is that no matter how passionate you are about something, you need to know how to run a business and do your due diligence on how it is going to make money and how the business will run. There is no one guaranteeing that you will make money just because you love something and if they say that's all you need, they aren't being helpful.

I really loved The Last Lecture video by Randy Pausch. Even though the whole thing wasn't mandatory viewing for the class, I think it should be. I hope that when my time comes I can look back at my life with as much satisfaction and optimism as he did with his.

Another book that I enjoyed and hope to reread and continue to implement in my life is Mastery. I think that it should be mandatory reading in middle school/high school. So often these days people think they are either going to be "naturally" good at something (meaning they will never have to practice a day in their life and will be one of the best at it) or they will never be able to learn the skill. The concept that we can learn to do just about anything with good instruction and a lot of work is something we all need to be reminded of, particularly when we seem to be struggling with a skill we want to learn. I plan on having my kids all read this book and I plan on revisiting it myself.

The final thing that I am taking away from this class and implementing in my life are the concepts found in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Even though the book itself wasn't required in the class, the summary was enough to convince me that it was what I needed to work on in my life. It seemed to answer questions about all the skills I was struggling with. I think that one of the "hidden" (or maybe not so hidden) messages from this class is that we must keep on learning. That is what I hope to move forward with. Even when my degree is done, my learning has only begun. Formal education is great but we spend more of our life learning from living than we do sitting in a classroom. We are all teachers and students and we can find fulfillment in ever aspect of our life. I am grateful for the reminder that this class has provided.
